I’ve spent much of my life asking questions.
As a child, I loved books and writing because they opened doors to new ideas, new places, and endless possibilities. Long before I ever dreamed of working in medicine, I discovered the joy of putting thoughts into words. My love for writing eventually led me to earn my first Bachelor’s degree in English Writing in 1998, but even then, I sensed that God was preparing me for something more. Looking back now, I can see that every chapter of my life was leading to the next, even when I couldn’t yet see the bigger picture.
My curiosity soon expanded beyond words and into the incredible design of the human body. I wanted to understand how we heal, why we become ill, and how we can live healthier, fuller lives. That desire led me back to school, where I continued my education through nursing and ultimately earned my Doctorate in Nursing Practice (DNP) in 2018. Every degree (I have earned six degrees so far) represented more than academic achievement. It reflected a deep desire to better serve others and to understand the masterpiece God created in each of us.
Yet for all the years I spent studying science, the most life-changing lesson didn’t come from a classroom.
Although I grew up in the Catholic Church and learned about God from an early age, I eventually realized there was a difference between knowing about God and truly knowing Him. In 2003, while living alone in Virginia and pursuing another degree, I found myself in a season of searching. Away from the familiar routines of home, I began opening my Bible with fresh eyes. I wasn’t reading simply to gain knowledge. I was searching for a personal relationship with the One who inspired its pages.
Somewhere during that quiet season, my faith became my own.
I discovered that Jesus wasn’t inviting me into religion. He was inviting me into relationship.
That realization transformed not only my personal life but also the way I viewed people, medicine and my purpose.
Today, as a Primary Care Provider, I strive to care for the whole person. While modern medicine offers remarkable tools to diagnose and treat disease, I believe true wellness extends far beyond lab results and prescriptions. Every patient has a body, a mind, emotions, relationships, and a spirit. My goal is to help people achieve optimal medical health while balancing their physical, emotional, and spiritual health because each part influences the others.
I’ve never believed that science and faith are competing paths. To me, they reveal different aspects of the same Creator. Science allows us to better understand the intricate design of God’s creation, while Scripture reveals His heart and His purpose for our lives. When these two perspectives come together, healthcare becomes more than preventing or treating illness. It becomes an opportunity to care for people the way Christ cared for people, with compassion, wisdom, and genuine concern for every part of their lives.
Looking back, I can see that God gave me a love for writing long before I understood how He would use it. What began as a childhood passion eventually became one of the most meaningful ways I could educate, encourage, and serve others.
Whether I’m educating patients in the exam room or writing articles for GO! Christian Magazine, my passion is helping people understand complex medical topics in practical, encouraging ways. I enjoy taking information that may seem overwhelming and making it accessible while weaving in biblical principles that remind readers that caring for our health is one way we honor the God who created us.
One group of people holds a particularly special place in my heart: older adults. Some of my greatest teachers have been my elderly patients. Their wisdom, resilience, and life experiences continually remind me that aging is not something to fear but a season to embrace with grace and purpose. Watching my own 90-year-old father, a man whose adventurous spirit and love for life have inspired me since childhood, continues to remind me that healthy aging is about far more than adding years to life. It’s about preserving the ability to love, serve, explore, and enjoy the people God has placed around us.
Outside of medicine and writing, I remain a lifelong student. I love learning, researching, asking questions, and discovering new ways to help others live healthier, more fulfilling lives. Whether I’m exploring advances in medicine, studying Scripture, or simply listening to the stories my patients share, I believe there is always something new that God wants to teach us.
When I look back over my life, I see God’s fingerprints in places I never recognized at the time. He used my love of writing to prepare me to teach. He used my fascination with science to prepare me for medicine. He used years of education to equip me to serve patients. And He used my own search for Him to remind me that our greatest need is not simply better health, but a deeper relationship with the One who gives us life.
If something I write encourages someone to make one healthier choice, ask one deeper question, or draw one step closer to Jesus, then every word has been worth writing.
