I just love fall. Something about the season seems to invite us to slow down, gather close, and remember what matters most. The air changes, the light dims, and suddenly our homes feel like they are meant to be filled again— with laughter, stories, warm blankets, hot drinks, and the familiar sound of dishes clinking in the kitchen while someone asks, “Can I help with anything?”
For many families, the fall holidays begin a busy stretch of time. From the first cool evening of autumn to Thanksgiving and beyond, we are given opportunity after opportunity to open our doors, set our tables, and welcome the people that God has placed in our lives. Hosting during this season is not about perfection. It’s about presence and making room in our homes and in our hearts.
The Bible has so much to say about hosting and hospitality. Scripture tells us in Romans 12:13, “Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.”
Hospitality is not just a social tradition. It’s a calling, and an important part of the Christian life. When we welcome others, we reflect the heart of Christ, who always made room for one more at the table.
In our family, fall means gathering. Sometimes it’s a planned dinner with a big pot of chili. Sometimes it’s a last-minute visit from the grandparents. And sometimes it’s a neighbor who pops over for coffee and to chat. The most meaningful moments come from sweet thoughts, attention to details, and preparation. They also come from willingness— the willingness to say, “Come on in,” even when the house isn’t perfect, the meal isn’t fancy, or the schedule feels too full. The only thing you need is a spirit to welcome, a desire to find joy in serving, and grace knowing your very best is good enough. (1 Peter 4:9)
One of my favorite traditions is preparing the house before guests arrive. I sit at my dining table and ask the Lord to bless every conversation that will happen there. I pray that anyone who enters my home will feel peace. I pray that my home will be a place where burdens feel lighter, hearts feel encouraged, and fun is shared.
Fall reminds us of the importance of family— the one we are born into and the family of God. Around the holidays, we often gather with people who we know best, and sometimes that can be both a blessing and a challenge. Families are not perfect. Not every relationship is easy. But the table is a powerful place. Sitting down together, sharing food, and giving thanks has a way of softening hearts.
Over the years, I have learned that the goal of hosting people is to make them feel like they belong. When someone walks into your home and feels at ease, when they stay a little longer than planned because they feel comfortable, when they leave saying, “I needed this,” you have done something beautiful.
As this fall season begins, open your home, even in simple ways. Invite a neighbor over for coffee. Ask a friend to stay for dinner. Set an extra place at the table. You never know what God will do through a small act of welcome.
Home is not just where we live, it’s a place where love is practiced, faith is shared, and where people are reminded they belong. These may be the greatest gifts we can give.
Welcome home.
